Sunday WOrship

We will not be meeting this Sunday due to  COVIV-19.
                 Promising Peace
                              Zechariah 8:1-17

“As I purposed to bring disaster to you when your fathers provoked me to wrath, and I did not relent, says the Lord of hosts,  so again have I purposed in these days to bring good to Jerusalem and to the house of Judah; fear not.” –                                                                                                                                     Zechariah 8:34-35

The prophets of God are typically seen as bearers of woe, forthtellers of punishment and cataclysm… rightly so, to a degree. What we often miss when in a state of fear or anger is the promise of hope that is included.

The promise of peace is not hidden from us by God, but by our own denial of responsibility for the behaviors that bring discipline. The prophets were scorned, mocked as mere story-tellers, and shunned as crazy people. Israel and Judah denied doing wrong. Obedience to the Law of God was considered optional, second to what or who could protect them from trials.

Some of the doctrines of the church today follow that line as well. Jesus is seen as a way to avoid trial rather than the invitation to persecution that it is. Jesus knew and preached that following Him would bring opposition.

However, being persecuted for the Name of Christ is very different from the judgment of God resulting from disobedience. Accountability for our salvation is in Christ alone. Accountability for our behavior is in us alone. Judgment comes as the promised consequence of disobedience. But peace comes from the grace and mercy of Almighty God.

Yes, we must believe we will see discipline, sometimes hurtful, when we ignore the word of God. We may be set adrift when we fail to trust in His Way and Rule. But God always, always offers the promise of peace to those who repent and return to Him in obedience. For there shall be a sowing of peace. “… the vine shall give its fruit, and the ground shall give its produce, and the heavens shall give their dew.” All will be right between man and God.
